The Schwan Food Company is dedicated to creating a pool of aspiring, competent knowledgeable senior managers so they can avoid searching outside of their organization. To build a talent pipeline, they put out a request to the managers to recommend people for their leadership academy. The first class was a group of 25 people selected out of a nominated group of 60.
The program gives senior leaders in the company an opportunity to interact with up-and-coming leaders as they work in small groups on high impact projects. Schwan's hopes that as more groups go through the program, their pool of talent will expand. By using the leadership academy to assess skills like building an effective team, delegation and motivation, The Schwan Food Company doesn't need to track these as closely when a person moves from one job to another.
